Here is the list of paperwork required to get started. (You should make copies of these papers and store away from your spouse).
A Baker's dozen-
1. One to five years of tax returns - all schedules and
attachments
2. Three recent pay stubs for you and your spouse
3. 12 months of all household bills
4. 12 months of credit card
statements
5. 12 months of pension statements
6. 12 months of investment statements
7. 12 months of car payments, boat
payments, or other revolving loan payments
8. Deeds to cars, boats, RV, motorcycles, other vehicles or movable personal
property
9. Proof of substantial gifts to one spouse or the
other during or prior to the marriage
10. List of any substantial pre-marital assets
11. Photographs of any lavish vacations
12. Bills of any lavish vacations
13. Proof of the other spouse stepping out with another person (only if you
already have it)
Once you have all of those documents stored
safely, you are in a position to answer 99% of the possible
inquires made during the course of divorce discovery.
